For a truly unique geological experience, start your journey at the Organ Pipes, an impressive rock formation just 20kms north-west of Melbourne. Formed by cooling and cracking volcanic lava, these towering pipes look just like their name suggests. A short walk away, you can also see the Rosetta Stone, which resembles the spokes of a wheel, a Tessellated pavement, and fossils over four million years old. It's a fantastic spot for social gatherings, with picnic spots and easy walking tracks.
The incredible Melton Botanic Garden showcases plants that thrive in dry climates. An outstanding feature is the internationally accredited Dryland Eucalyptus Arboretum with over 100 species, alongside Indigenous plantings, a sensory garden, and a fantastic nature play space for kids. In Werribee, Wyndham Park is an urban oasis that gracefully curves around the Werribee River. Just a short walk from Werribee's excellent coffee scene, the park features rolling green lawns, riverside bike and walking tracks amongst majestic Red Gums, and two huge playgrounds. A must see in Werribee South is the K Road Cliffs overlooking the Werribee River. These spectacular cliffs offer a breathtaking view by day and are even more impressive during dusk and sunset when they change colour with the light.
For a taste of history and horticultural beauty, visit Queens Park in Moonee Ponds, a historic nature haven founded in 1865. Its picturesque cottage, idyllic lake, and public art pieces create a serene setting. The park is a haven for a variety of birds and a popular spot for concerts and festivals.
If spotting wildlife is more your style, the West has plenty to offer. Newport Lakes is a bushland gem tucked within the suburbs, transformed from a former bluestone quarry into a tranquil reserve teeming with native birdlife. With its serene walking trails, lake views and sheltered picnic spots, it's an ideal escape for birdwatchers and nature lovers alike. Head further west to explore the coastal birdlife at Truganina Coastal Parklands, where expansive salt marshes and trails provide the perfect vantage points to observe migratory waders and waterbirds. Not far along the coastline south of Werribee South Beach is The Western Treatment Plant, considered to be one of Australia’s top bird-watching sites and internationally recognised under the Ramsar Convention. The diversity of birdlife is considered second only to Kakadu in Australia, with over 280 recorded species. Private tours are available, or you can apply and pay online for a bird watching day pass.
The Maribyrnong River, which begins on the slopes of Mount Macedon, has played a major role in the history of western Victoria, with Aboriginal tribes frequenting its banks for at least 40,000 years. The river winds along Footscray Park, home to Victoria's most intact Edwardian-era public garden, with fantastic views of Melbourne's skyline. The park also provides large open playing fields and barbeque facilities along the river. Ideal for families and outdoor lovers, the park also features open playing fields, picnic areas, and barbecue facilities, making it a popular spot for both locals and visitors to relax, connect, and enjoy the natural beauty of the west.
Just a bit further along the river is Brimbank Park, part of an Aboriginal cultural landscape of the Wurundjeri Peoples. Brimbank Park is an incredible haven for creative play, with a playscape designed for children of all abilities. With over 10 kilometres of extensive walking and cycling trails, Brimbank Park is perfect for a long stroll or a bike ride, offering incredible views and a deep connection to nature.
Melbourne’s West is home to some beautiful beaches, perfect for long walks in winter and long lazy days out with the family in summer. Altona Beach is a fantastic destination, renowned for its charming Esplanade and calm waters, which are ideal for recreational activities like swimming, paddle boarding, and beach volleyball. The Esplanade is a shared walking and cycling path shaded by majestic Norfolk Pines, connecting you to the wider Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail. Just a short drive or train ride away, Williamstown Beach is another must-visit. Finally, Point Cook Coastal Park is a haven for abundant birdlife and features a historic bluestone homestead and a Marine Reserve, perfect for a family picnic with free gas barbecues and a children's play area.
